What changed
OpenAI has formally announced Sponsored Agents as a new ChatGPT Ads format. After a user clicks a relevant ad, they can choose to start a clearly labeled conversation with an agent sponsored by that business, ask follow-up questions, and then follow a link to the advertiser when they are ready. OpenAI says the Sponsored Agent conversation is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the original conversation the user started.
The format is currently being tested with select advertisers in the United States. The announcement turns a feature that had been spotted in advertising tooling and discussed in trade coverage into an official OpenAI product test, so the existence and intended behaviour of Sponsored Agents can now be treated as confirmed.
The advertising stack is becoming more agentic
OpenAI is also moving campaign work into ChatGPT itself. Advertisers can use natural-language prompts with the Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT Work to create, update and analyse campaigns, while Ads Manager now offers AI-assisted copy and imagery. An opt-in text-customisation feature can adapt an advertiser’s existing headlines and descriptions to the context of a conversation and translate copy into the user’s preferred language.
The company is connecting that system to existing business software. HubSpot is its first CRM integration, while US Shopify merchants can use the ChatGPT Ads app to sync product inventory, build campaigns from their catalogues, track conversions and manage performance. OpenAI says the Shopify app will expand internationally on 23 September in markets where ChatGPT Ads are available.
Why it matters
The important shift is from a sponsored placement beneath an answer to an optional branded dialogue inside ChatGPT. That gives advertisers a way to stay inside the user’s decision process for longer, answering product or service questions before an outbound visit, while OpenAI gains a more differentiated advertising product than a conventional display or search unit.
The underlying ad system is already more developed than a simple experiment. OpenAI’s current advertiser documentation says ads can use conversation context for relevance, are selected through a relevance-weighted second-price auction, and support impression, click and conversion optimisation. It also says Plus, Pro and Business plans do not show ads, keeping the commercial experience concentrated in the ad-supported tiers.
Boundaries and open questions
OpenAI’s January advertising principles say ads should remain separate from answers, conversations should stay private from advertisers, and users should retain control over personalisation. Today’s Sponsored Agents announcement reinforces the visual and conversational separation, but it does not yet spell out the exact reporting, retention or sponsor-access rules for conversations that users deliberately start with a branded agent.
The rollout is also still narrow. OpenAI has not announced general Sponsored Agent availability, a dedicated pricing model, or a timetable beyond the current US advertiser test. Broader access, agent-specific privacy documentation, pricing and evidence about how often users choose to enter these sponsored conversations are the next material signals to watch.
